What is a certificate of no impediment?<\/h3>\n

A certificate of marital capacity is issued by the municipality, from the civil registry. The document states that you are unmarried and that you and your partner are allowed to marry under Dutch law. You need the certificate when you want to get married abroad. In English this document is called a certificate of no impediment, in German an Ehef\u00e4higkeitszeugnis.<\/p>\n

Why a sworn translation is needed<\/h3>\n

Foreign authorities often do not accept a Dutch certificate without an official translation. A sworn translation<\/a> is produced by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator attaches the translation to the source document and provides it with a stamp, signature and statement. This makes the translation recognised as legally valid. Sometimes the destination country also asks for an apostille<\/a> or legalisation<\/a>. An apostille<\/a> is issued by the court under the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961).<\/p>\n
