What is a sworn translation of a diploma?

A sworn translation of your diploma is a translation produced by a translator listed in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator adds a stamp, signature and statement declaring that the translation is a faithful representation of the original document. This makes the translation legally valid and accepted by official authorities. Your diploma and transcript are issued by the educational institution; for use abroad you sometimes need legalisation as well, which for Dutch education is handled through DUO.

Why have your diploma translated by a sworn translator?

A regular translation of your diploma is usually not enough for formal purposes. Universities, employers and government authorities ask for a sworn translation, so that they can be sure the content is correct and the document is genuine. What do you call a diploma in English?

In English a diploma is usually referred to as a diploma, certificate or degree, depending on the type of education. For a sworn translation the translator chooses the right term based on your qualification and the destination country.

How do you say an mbo level 4 diploma in English?

In English, mbo is translated as secondary vocational education. An mbo-diploma at level 4 is a programme for middle management and is comparable to a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma. The sworn translator ensures a correct and recognisable rendering.

How do you translate vwo, havo and mbo into English?

Commonly used translations are pre-university education for vwo, senior general secondary education for havo and secondary vocational education for mbo. Hbo is translated as higher professional education.

Should I have my diploma translated or evaluated?

A translation renders the content of your diploma in another language. If you want to know which foreign level your diploma is comparable to, you are looking at an evaluation or recognition. For a legally valid document abroad you usually need a sworn translation that you may supplement with legalisation through DUO.
