What is a sworn translation of a will?

A sworn translation of your will is produced by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator provides the translation with a stamp, signature and a statement that the translation is a true copy of the original. This makes the translation legally valid and accepted by authorities at home and abroad. An ordinary translation does not have that legal status.

How can I have my will translated?

For the sworn translation of your will you need a sworn translator. The translator translates your will and provides the translation with a stamp and signature, so that it can be shown the document has been translated faithfully. How long is a sworn translation valid?

A sworn translation itself has no fixed expiry date. The translator's registration in the Rbtv is valid for five years and is renewed afterwards. To become sworn, the translator must among other things submit a diploma from a recognised translation course and a Certificate of Conduct (VOG) to the court.

Do I also need an apostille for a will?

That depends on the country where you use the document. For use in countries that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille is often needed. It is issued by the court. We can have your will fitted with an apostille or legalisation.

Who draws up a will?

A will is drawn up by a notary and is therefore a notarial deed. For use abroad, or for a foreign will in the Netherlands, you have this document translated under oath by a translator registered in the Rbtv.
