What is a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is an official, legally valid translation of a formal document that is produced exclusively by a sworn translator may be translated. A sworn translator has always been sworn in by a Dutch court and is also registered with one or more courts in the Netherlands.
When do you need a sworn translation?
A sworn translation You need a sworn translation for documents that need to be translated into another language for official bodies (both in the Netherlands and abroad). You will usually be informed by the body itself whether or not the translation of your official document needs to be certified.

Examples of documents that almost always require an official one sworn translation is required:
- Legal documents (writs, judgments, decisions, bailiff's orders, petitions, defences)
- Notarial documents (statutes, founding documents, purchase deeds, wills, inheritance statements)
- Civil status-documents (driving licences, passports, population register extracts, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, acts registered partnership, separation acts)
- Agreements or contracts (leases, purchase agreements, employment contracts, pension agreements)
- Other official documents such as emigration documents, diplomas, certificates, transcripts, references, pay slips, employer statements, tax documents, extracts from the Chamber of Commerce
What does a sworn translation look like?
When you order one from us sworn translation If you order, you will receive a bound package consisting of 3 parts by (registered) letter post:
- The originalThis is also called the output text or source text. You must upload the original by means of a well-exposed scan or cropped photo with your smartphone/tablet when ordering in our web shop.
- The sworn translation: the sworn translation is attached to the original and provided with a legalization stamp or apostille (if ordered) and a signature of the sworn translator. The translated document has the same legal value as the original.
- The official statement of the sworn translator: in this statement, provided with signature, official stamp and date, the sworn translator declares that the translation is a true representation of the original.
The above 3 parts are fraud-proof tied together into one package.
Apostilles and legalisations
Sometimes authorities require additional assurance that the signature on the sworn translation actually belongs to the sworn translator involved. In that case one can legalisation or apostille be requested. Both legalisations as apostilles can be ordered quickly and easily in our webshop!
