Do you need a sworn translation of a death certificate for official use? After a passing away abroad, many authorities, such as banks, insurers and notaries, ask for a sworn translation of the death certificate before they handle the case. What is a certified translation of a death certificate?
A death certificate is an official document from the civil registry of the municipality where the passing away was registered. A sworn translation is a translation produced by a translator sworn in by a Dutch court and registered in the Rbtv. The translator provides the translation with a stamp, a signature and a statement confirming that the translation matches the original. This makes the translation legally valid and recognised by official authorities.
Why a sworn translation is needed
For use at a foreign or Dutch authority an ordinary translation is often not enough. A death certificate touches on matters such as inheritance, pension and insurance, so the receiving party wants certainty about the accuracy of the text. A sworn translator provides that certainty through the certification statement. If the certificate is used abroad, in addition to the translation an legalisation or apostille is needed. An apostille is issued by the court under the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961).
