What is subtitling?

Subtitles are written text at the bottom of the screen that shows what is said in a video. Good subtitles stay in sync with the picture, have a readable line length and are easy to read in time. That way your message still comes across even without sound, for example on Instagram, LinkedIn or YouTube, where many people watch videos without sound. Subtitles also make a video accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers and to viewers in a busy environment.

Types of subtitling: SRT file or burned-in, same-language or translated

You decide which format you receive your subtitles in. Two choices matter here.

  • Separate SRT file or burned-in: a .srt file is a separate text file with the subtitles and the associated time codes. You link it to the video yourself and can edit it later. With burned-in (hardcoded) subtitles the text is fixed in the picture, so the subtitles are always visible regardless of the player or platform.
  • Same-language or translated: with same-language subtitles the text is in the same language as the speech in the video, handy for accessibility and for watching without sound. With translated subtitles you convert the spoken language into one or more other languages, so an international audience can follow the video in their own language.
