What is a sworn translation of a power of attorney?

A proxy is a document with which you authorise someone to act on your behalf, for example with a notary, bank or government authority. For cross-border use, a sworn translation is often needed. A notarial proxy is drawn up or confirmed by a notary; a private authorisation you draw up yourself. In both cases, a sworn translator translates the content fully and faithfully.

Why a sworn translation is legally valid

A sworn translation is produced by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and authorised to do so by a court. The translator attaches the translation to a copy of your proxy and provides it with a stamp, signature and a statement. This makes the translation legally valid and accepted by authorities such as notaries, municipalities and the IND. For use abroad, an apostille is needed. An apostille is issued by the court under the Apostille Convention (The Hague Convention 1961).

How do you know whether a translator is sworn?

A sworn translator is authorised by a court and registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). You can look up a sworn translator through the register of Bureau Wbtv. Our translations always carry the stamp, signature and statement of the sworn translator.

What does it cost to translate a power of attorney?

What is a certified translation with apostille?

For use of your proxy abroad, an apostille may be needed. The apostille is issued by the court under the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961) and confirms the authenticity of the signature on the sworn translationin question. You can have your document fitted with an apostille or legalisation.

When do you need a sworn translation of a power of attorney?

A sworn translation is needed when an official authority must be able to accept your proxy in another language, for example with a foreign notary, bank or government authority. For use with authorities such as the IND, the translator must be sworn in by a Dutch court.
