What is a notarial deed and when do you need a translation?

A notarial deed is an official document drawn up and signed by a notary for example a deed of transfer, mortgage deed, deed of incorporation, deed of gift or certificate of inheritance. As soon as you use this document outside the Netherlands, or a foreign authority needs to be able to read its contents, a sworn translation is needed. A regular translation is then often not accepted.

Why a certified translation of your deed

A sworn translation is produced by a translator listed in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) who has been sworn in by a Dutch court. The translator adds a stamp, a signature and a statement confirming that the translation is a true and faithful copy of the original. This makes your translated deed legally valid and recognised by authorities, notaries and courts.

How do I get a notarial deed translated?

You have your notarial deed translated by a sworn translator listed in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators. At Ecrivus you upload online a scan or photo of your deed and choose the language combination. Can I have a document translated and notarised?

A sworn translation is a translated document with an attached statement. The translator signs that statement and thereby confirms that the translation is accurate. For most notarial deeds this sworn translationis sufficient. For use abroad, an apostille or legalisation may also be needed.

What does it cost to translate a notarial deed?

Who may produce a certified translation of a deed?

Only a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and is listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) may produce a sworn translation for you. At Ecrivus we work exclusively with qualified, sworn translators.

Do I need an apostille with my translated deed?

Whether an apostille is needed depends on the country where you use the deed afterwards. An apostille is issued by the court under the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961). We can have your deed fitted with an apostille or legalisation when this is necessary.
