What is a sworn translation of a permit?

A permit is issued in the Netherlands by a government authority, such as the municipality, the Chamber of Commerce or Customs, depending on the type of permit. An sworn translation is a translation of that original document with a stamp, signature and statement from the translator. This makes the translation a legally valid rendering of your original permit and is accepted by official authorities.

Why a sworn translator is required

Only a translator entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) may issue a sworn translation of this kind. This translator is sworn in by a Dutch court and certifies that the translation is a faithful and accurate rendering of the original. If the destination country needs additional authentication, you can have the translation fitted with an apostille (issued by the court under the Apostille Convention, The Hague Convention of 1961) or a legalisation.

What are the rules for a sworn translation?

A sworn translation in the Netherlands is not a formality but a legal required document with clear rules. The translator is registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and certifies that the translation is a faithful and accurate rendering of the original. With a stamp, signature and statement, the translation is legally valid.

How do I know whether a translator is sworn?

All sworn translators are listed in the public Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators. You can search there by name, number and language combination. If the translator is in the register, they have a valid appointment and may translate your documents under oath. Ecrivus works only with sworn translators.

How can I have a sworn translation legalised?

A sworn translation can be legalised by the court. The court checks the signature under the sworn statement and confirms that it is really the signature of the sworn translator. This then establishes with certainty that it is a valid sworn translation of this type. In many countries you only need an apostille of the court.

What does it cost to translate a permit?
