What is a deed of public sale?

A deed of public sale is a notarial deed drawn up by a civil-law notary for the sale of immovable property via a public auction, for example a foreclosure auction. The deed sets out the conditions, the buyer and the purchase price, and therefore has a formal legal status. For use abroad, with a foreign authority or a party that speaks another language, an official translation is often needed.

Why a sworn translation?

A sworn translation is produced by a translator sworn in by a court and listed in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator adds a stamp, a signature and a statement that the document has been translated truthfully. This makes the translation legally valid and accepted by official authorities. A regular or machine translation does not have this status and is usually rejected for notarial deeds.

Can ChatGPT or another AI program translate my deed?

No. An AI or machine translation cannot provide a legally valid sworn translation to you. An official translation requires a signed statement of accuracy from a court-sworn translator, and an AI cannot legally provide that.
