A sworn translation is suitable for court documents, litigation files, decisions, notarial actspowers of attorney and other official legal documentsamong others. What is a certified translation of a legal document?

A sworn translation is a translation produced by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator provides the translation with a stamp, a signature and a statement that the translation matches the content of the original document. This makes the translation legally valid and usable at bodies such as courts, lawyers, notaries and government organisations.

Why have a legal document translated under oath?

Legal documents have legal consequences. That is why an official translation may only be produced and signed by a sworn translator. In the Netherlands that translator must be sworn in by a Dutch court. An ordinary translation is not accepted by many authorities, whereas a sworn translation has the same legal value as the original document. If your translation is used abroad, an apostille or legalisation needed. A apostille is issued by the court under the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961).

How sworn translation works at Ecrivus

Is a legal translation always sworn?
