What is a residence permit?
A residence permit is the official document that allows you to live, work or study in the Netherlands. The residence permit is issued by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). If you want to use this document abroad or with an authority that uses another language, a sworn translation is often required. Internationally the document is also referred to as a residence permit or residence card.
Why a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is produced by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator provides the translation with a stamp, signature and statement. This makes the translation legally valid and accepted by official authorities such as the IND, municipalities and foreign governments. For use abroad you can also have your document fitted with an apostille or legalisation.

Where can I have documents translated and legalised?
You can have your documents translated online by a translation agency that works with sworn translators, such as Ecrivus International. We produce the sworn translation and also offer the option to have your document fitted with an apostille or legalisation for use abroad.
Is a residence permit the same as a passport?
No. A passport is a travel document that proves your nationality. A residence permit is the official permission from the IND to reside, work or study in the Netherlands. So they are two different documents with a different purpose.
What does legalisation mean?
Legalization is a confirmation that a document or the signature on it is genuine, so that it is recognised abroad. For countries that are party to the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961) this is done with an apostille from the court. For other countries a more extensive legalisation procedure applies.
How much does it cost to translate a residence permit?

Can a residence permit be used as proof of identity?
A residence permit shows that you are lawfully resident in the Netherlands and contains personal data, but the requirements for identification differ per situation and authority. If you want to use the document abroad, a sworn translation often necessary.
