You often use such a declaration when importing or exporting a car and when registering the number plate with the RDW. If you want to use the document abroad, the receiving authority usually asks for a sworn translation.
A sworn translation is produced by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and is entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator attaches to the translation a statement with a stamp and signature, stating that the translation is a faithful representation of the original. This makes the translation legally valid and accepted by official authorities.
When is a certified translation necessary?
Whether your car clearance needs a sworn translation depends on the authority that requests the document. For use with a foreign authority, vehicle registration body or customs, an ordinary translation is usually not enough. We recommend asking the relevant authority in advance which requirements apply, so that you can be sure the sworn translation matches your situation. If the document also needs to be legalised, we can have your car clearance fitted with an apostille or legalisation.

A sworn translator has been sworn in by a Dutch court and is entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). You can look up a sworn translator via Bureau Wbtv. At Ecrivus your car clearance is always translated by a translator listed in this register.
What is the difference between a certified translation and an apostille?
A sworn translation is the substantive, legally valid translation of your car clearance by a sworn translator. An apostille is a separate stamp that confirms the authenticity of the document or the signature for use in countries party to the Apostille Convention (Hague Convention, 1961). For some destinations you need both.
How do I legalise a sworn translation with an apostille?
