The translation is handled by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and carries a stamp, signature and statement. This makes the translation legally valid.
What is an insurance policy?
A insurance policy is the document that your insurer issues as proof of the insurance contract. The policy sets out what is insured, which cover and conditions apply and which rights and obligations you and the insurer have. Because this text contains many legal and financial terms, a foreign authority often asks for a sworn translation in which nothing about the content changes.
When do you need a sworn translation?
An ordinary translation is usually not sufficient for official use. A sworn translation is attached by the translator to a copy of your original policy and signed, stamped and provided with a statement that the translation is correct and complete. This way a foreign insurer, authority or employer can verify that the text matches the original.
Apostille or legalisation
For use abroad the receiving authority sometimes asks for an apostille. An apostille is a statement from the court that confirms the signature of the sworn translator in question. Between countries that are party to the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961), the apostillesuffices; for other countries a more extensive legalisation may be needed. What is a verzekeringspolis in English?
A insurance policy is called, in English, an insurance policy. The separate Dutch word 'polis' becomes policy and 'verzekering' becomes insurance. In a sworn translation all specialist terms are reproduced consistently and correctly.
What does an insurance policy contain?
The policy is the agreement between you and the insurer. It contains the details of your insurance: what is and is not covered, the premium, the conditions and the rights and obligations of both parties. It is the official proof of your insurance.
When do I need a sworn translation of my policy?
A sworn translation is needed when a foreign insurer, authority or employer requires a legally valid translation. The translator is registered in the Rbtv and provides the translation with a stamp, signature and statement.
Do I also need an apostille?
That depends on the country of destination. For countries that are party to the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961), an apostille from the court is sufficient. We can arrange the apostille or legalisation for you.
