Do you need a sworn translation of your living will for official use? At Ecrivus International you arrange this easily online. What is a living will?
A living will is a notarial power of attorney in which you set out who manages your affairs when you can no longer do so yourself, for example in case of illness or incapacity. The deed is drawn up by a notary and registered in the Central Register of Living Wills (CLTR) of the Royal Dutch Association of Civil-law Notaries (KNB). You use it to arrange financial, medical and personal decisions, among other things. Unlike an ordinary will, a living will already takes effect during your lifetime.
Why a sworn translation?
Do you want to have your living will to use abroad, or does a foreign authority, bank or notary need to be able to read the document? Then a sworn translation is needed. An sworn translation is produced by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator provides the document with a stamp, signature and a statement that the translation matches the original. This makes the translation legally valid and recognised by official authorities.

What does a certified living will translation cost?

How do I know whether a translator is sworn?
A sworn translator is registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator has taken an oath before the court and may provide official documents with a stamp, signature and statement. Our translations are made exclusively by Rbtv translators.
What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is produced by a translator registered in the Rbtv and is legally valid for official use, with a stamp and statement. A certified translation mainly emphasises the translator's competence, but does not always have the same legal status. For a living will abroad, a sworn translation is required.
Can ChatGPT translate a legal document like a living will?
No. For official use a signed statement of accuracy from a qualified, sworn translator is required. An AI tool cannot provide that in law. A living will also contains legal concepts that must be translated precisely and with knowledge of inheritance law.
Do I need an apostille for my translated living will?
It depends on the country where you use the document. For countries that are party to the Apostille Convention (The Hague Convention, 1961) an apostille from the court is usually sufficient. You can have your translation fitted with an apostille or legalisation.
