What is a proof of life?

A certificate of vita is an international proof that you are alive. You request this document from your municipality (the Personal Records Database, BRP). You often need it when a foreign authority, such as a pension fund or life insurer, asks for proof that you are still alive. If you want to use this document abroad, you usually need to have it translated by a sworn translator.

Why a sworn translation?

A foreign authority accepts a certificate of vita usually only in its own language. A sworn translation is produced by a translator entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator provides the translation with a stamp, signature and statement, which makes the translation legally valid. If the receiving country requires it, you can also have the document fitted with an apostille or legalisation.

Certificate of Vita means proof that someone is alive. It is an international document showing that you are still alive. Paying institutions, such as pension funds, ask for this proof to be sure that the beneficiary is still living.

What is the English translation of attestatie de vita?

In English a certificate of vita is called a certificate of existence or a certificate of life. A sworn translator ensures the correct, legally valid translation into English or another language.

How can I request a proof of life?

You request a certificate of vita from your municipality, in many cases digitally with DigiD via a BRP extract. If you need the proof for a foreign authority, you can then have it translated by a sworn translator.

Do I need to have my proof of life translated?

Or you your certificate of vita needs to be translated depends on the country where you use it. The rules differ from country to country. If the foreign authority asks for a translation, you can have this done by a sworn interpreter or translator.

Is a sworn translation legally valid abroad?

A sworn translation is produced by a translator entered in the Rbtv and provided with a stamp, signature and statement. This makes the translation legally valid. Sometimes the receiving country asks for an additional apostille or legalisation.
