What is a declaration of unmarried status?
A statement unmarried, also called a Trade Register statement of unmarried status, shows that you are not married and have no registered partnership. In the Netherlands this is usually an extract from the Personal Records Database (BRP), which you request from the municipality where you live. You often need this document when you want to marry abroad. For use with a foreign authority, the statement usually needs to be translated.
Why a sworn translation is needed
Foreign authorities accept an official document only if the translation is made by an authorised translator. A sworn translation is handled by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator adds a statementplus a stamp and signature stating that the translation is a correct rendering of the original. This makes the translation legally valid. In many countries, an apostille or legalisation is usually required. A apostille you request from the court, under the Apostille Convention (the Hague Convention of 1961).
