What is an IND document?

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service, orINDfor short, issues documents that record your residence and status in the Netherlands. Think of a residence permit, a decision or another letter about your application for residence, naturalisation or family reunification. If you want to use such a document abroad or submit it to another authority, a sworn translation is required.

Why a sworn translation?

A sworn translation is produced by a translator sworn in by a Dutch court and registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator adds a stamp, signature and a signed statement that the translation is a correct and complete representation of the original document. This makes the translation legally valid and recognised by authorities such as the INDand other authorities, including municipalities and foreign bodies. An ordinary translation does not have this official status.

Frequently asked questions about translating an IND document

Does the IND accept a certified translation?

Yes. The IND requires that documents in another language are translated by a translator sworn in by a Dutch court. Our translators are registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv), which makes the translation legally valid and recognised by the IND.

Which IND documents can I have translated?

In which languages can you translate my document?

You choose from hundreds of language combinations. Both a translation from Dutch into English, for example, and the other way around are possible. You select the desired language combination at the top of this page.

Do I also need an apostille or legalisation?

If you want to use the document abroad, in addition to the sworn translation sometimes an apostille or legalisation is needed. An apostille is issued by the court under the Apostille Convention (The Hague Convention of 1961). We can arrange this for you if you wish.
