What is a certified translation of a travel document?

A travel document such as a passport or identity card is issued in the Netherlands by the municipality. If you want to use this document abroad or at an official authority, a sworn translation is needed. An sworn translation is a literal translation provided with the stamp, signature and statement of the translator. That statement confirms that the translation truthfully matches the original document, which makes the translation legally valid.

Why a sworn translator is required

In the Netherlands only a translator sworn in by a court may produce a sworn translation of this kind. This translator is registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv), managed by Bureau Wbtv. Registration in this register is the guarantee that the translator is authorised to translate your travel document under oath. For use abroad an apostille or legalisation may also be needed, depending on the destination country.
