Certified contract translation: legally valid and stamped
A contract is a private legal document between parties, without an issuing government body. If you want to use this contract abroad or with a Dutch authority, an ordinary translation is often not enough. You then have the contract translated under oath by a translator listed in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). At Ecrivus International you arrange this online from €59.
What is a certified translation of a contract?
For a sworn translation the legal translator attaches the translation to a copy of your original contractin full. The translator then adds a signed statement, with a stamp and signature, confirming that the translation is word-for-word and accurate. That combination makes the translation legally valid, so that authorities can trust that the text matches the original in content.
When do you need a certified contract translation?
You need a sworn translation when you submit a contract to a court, a government body or a foreign party that requires an official translation. Think of an employment contract, a purchase agreement or a cooperation agreement that has to be submitted in another language. For use outside the Netherlands, an authority may also ask for an apostille as well. An apostille is placed on the document by the court under the Apostille Convention (The Hague Convention of 1961).

What is a certified translation of a contract?
A sworn translation is produced by a translator who is registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator adds a stamp, signature and a statement that the text has been translated word-for-word and accurately. This makes the translation legally valid.
What does a certified contract translation cost?

Can ChatGPT translate a contract so that it is legally valid?
No. A legally valid translation requires a signed statement of accuracy from a qualified, sworn translator. An AI tool cannot legally issue that statement, so a machine translation is not accepted by authorities.
Do I also need an apostille for my contract?
That depends on the country and the authority where the contract will be used. For use abroad, authorities often ask for an apostillefor that country. This is placed on the document by the court under the Apostille Convention (The Hague Convention of 1961). We can arrange the apostille or legalisation for you.
What does beëdigd mean in English?
A sworn translation is the English term; the Dutch word 'beëdigd' means 'sworn'. The sworn translator makes a promise, comparable to taking an oath, and may then produce legally valid translations of official documents such as contracts.
