Certified medicine declaration translation
Are you travelling abroad with medication and do you need your statement in a language other than Dutch or English? What is a medicine declaration?
A medicine declaration shows that you use your medication on a doctor's prescription and may take it with you when travelling. The statement is drawn up in consultation with your doctor or pharmacy and, in the Netherlands, issued through the CAK. There are several variants, including the Schengen declaration for medicines that fall under the Opium Act and the English-language medicine declaration. For destinations outside the Schengen area or outside the English-speaking world, customs often asks for a translation in the language of the country.
Why a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is produced by a translator registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and bears a stamp, signature and statement that make the translation legally valid. A border check or foreign authority can then see that the content is a correct and official rendering of your original medicine declaration. An ordinary translation lacks this safeguard and is not always accepted.

When do I need a translated medicine declaration?
Whether you need a translation depends on your medication, the country you travel to and the duration of the trip. For countries within the Schengen area the Schengen declaration is often enough, and for many other destinations the English-language medicine declaration. If you travel to a country where English is not accepted, customs usually asks for a sworn translation in the local language.

Where do I get my medicine declaration?
You draw up the medicine declaration in consultation with your doctor or pharmacy, and in the Netherlands it is issued through the CAK. You use the completed and signed document as the source file. On that basis we produce the sworn translation with a stamp.
Is a certified translation legally valid abroad?
Yes. A sworn translation is produced by a translator from the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators and bears a stamp, signature and statement. For some countries an apostille is also needed. We can arrange that for you through the court under the Apostille Convention (The Hague Convention, 1961).
