Certified proof of life translation by a sworn translator
A proof of that to be alive is a written statement with which you demonstrate that you are alive at the time of issue. The municipality issues it based on your registration in the Personal Records Database (BRP). Pension funds, insurers and foreign benefits agencies regularly request this document. What is a certified translation of a proof of life?
A sworn translation is produced by a translator listed in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator adds a stamp, signature and statement to the translation. This makes the translation legally valid and acceptable to official authorities at home and abroad. The translation is attached to the original document or a certified copy.
Difference from the attestatie de vita
The proof of to be alive is drawn up in Dutch and therefore intended for use within the Netherlands. The international version is called the certificate of vitais a multilingual document (including Dutch and French) intended for use abroad. If you have a Dutch-language proof of to be alive and it needs translating into a specific language, then a sworn translation is the appropriate route.
Apostille or legalisation for use abroad
For some countries, in addition to the sworn translation need an apostille is needed. An apostille is issued by the court and confirms the authenticity of the signature on the document. This is governed by the Apostille Convention (The Hague Convention of 1961). For countries that are not party to this convention, the applicable procedure is legalisationin such cases. Why do I need a certified translation?
